You may find the relationship between IV therapy and the coronavirus surprising, but this powerful therapy has been used to boost the immune system for quite some time. In fact, a growing number of patients have begun turning to IV therapy to protect themselves against cold and flu season.
With the current spread of the coronavirus COVID-19 becoming an increasing concern amongst our patients, we decided to share the benefits of IV therapy and break down how this treatment can help you stay healthy and/or recover faster from an array of illnesses. Boosting the immune system is the first step to staying healthy, but if you do get sick, IV therapy can also help alleviate uncomfortable symptoms.
What Is IV Therapy?
When vitamins, minerals, nutrients, medications, or saline solutions for hydration are administered to patients intravenously, it is called IV therapy. In regenerative medicine, IV therapy is used to treat a wide range of health, beauty, and wellness concerns because it delivers key nutrients in a way that the body is able to use them to their maximum potential.
When nutrients or medication are administered orally, they first pass through the digestive tract and get broken down. This process renders a significant portion (approximately 50%) of the nutrients and vitamins we eat unusable by the body. IV therapy solves this problem by circumventing the digestive system. With IV therapy, key ingredients are delivered directly to a patient’s bloodstream, which yields faster and more effective results.
What Is the Coronavirus?
Technically speaking, there are several different coronaviruses. Some affect humans and some affect animals, such as camels, bats, and cats. Most coronaviruses are not cause for serious concern, presenting with symptoms akin to those of the common cold. The particular virus that has been making headlines as of late and demanding international attention is a novel (or newly discovered) strain of coronavirus. This particular strain was named COVID-19 by the World Health Organization in February of 2020. COVID-19 specifically denotes the strain of coronavirus disease that originated in China in 2019.
Human infection with COVID-19 is believed to have originated out of the Huanan seafood and live animal market in Wuhan, China. While most viruses, including the majority of coronavirus strains, affect either animals or humans, this particular strain was passed from animals to humans.
Genome sequencing has led scientists to believe that COVID-19 originated in bats, which is particularly concerning because bats have a robust immune system. When a virus finds a host, be it animal or human, it mutates in response to the host’s immune system reaction. The more robust the immune system of the host, the more rapidly and, in certain cases, more extremely the virus can change. This is why humans are encouraged to get a new flu vaccine each year – because the virus strain changes. Some of the most infamous human viruses including SARS and Ebola are believed to have originated from bats.
What Are the Symptoms of Coronavirus?
The most common symptoms of COVID-19 are fever, cough, and shortness of breath. It primarily affects the respiratory system. Because this coronavirus strain is still relatively new, researchers are working diligently to gain a better understanding of how COVID-19 spreads, exactly how long its incubation period lasts, and how long those infected are contagious.
At this time there is no cure for COVID-19, which is why countries such as China and Italy have begun imposing quarantines. If you begin to show symptoms of COVID-19, you should seek medical attention. The CDC suggests that you should call ahead to let your healthcare provider know you may be showing symptoms of COVID-19 before your arrival, especially if you have traveled to China in the last 14 days.
How Can IV Therapy Help with Viruses Like the Coronavirus?
At this point, you may be asking yourself, “how can IV therapy help with viruses we know so little about?” The answer lies in what we do know about the body’s immune system. Everything from sleep and exercise to hydration and diet affect our immune system function. If you are falling behind in even one of these areas, your immune system may not be able to do its job. In turn, you are more likely to become sick if you do come in contact with a virus.
Statistics as of February 2020, place the overall mortality rate of COVID-19 at 2.3%, which is higher than that of the flu in 2019 but significantly lower than the death rates associated with MERS or SARS. The COVID-19 numbers are still evolving as the virus continues to spread, but the most up-to-date reporting has found that mortality rates are higher among elderly patients, smokers, and those with pre-existing conditions, such as cardiovascular disease and diabetes. While IV therapy cannot prevent you from coming in contact with COVID-19, it can help strengthen your immune system’s ability to fight it off.
IV therapy is tailored to each individual patient. Whether you’re looking to get a better night’s sleep or want to supply your body with vital nutrients you’re not getting enough of, IV therapy can help. At Aspire Regenerative, we offer a myriad of IV therapy infusions to help patients boost their immune system, achieve better rest, reduce stress, and improve their overall health (all of which increase your body’s ability to fight off viruses and infections). Here are just a few of our IV infusions that can help boost your immune system:
- Aspire Cold and Flu Remedy – This IV therapy delivers ingredients including glutathione, zinc, and vitamin C, that have been shown to facilitate proper immune system function.
- Aspire Sleep Easy – This IV therapy includes magnesium and various nutrients proven to help manufacture sleep. Studies have shown that people who do not get adequate sleep are more susceptible to viruses and infections, so making sure you’re catching enough z’s each night is vital.
- Myer’s Cocktail – This IV infusion contains key ingredients including vitamins C, B, magnesium, thiamine, and zinc. Research has found that this IV therapy not only supports the immune system but can be effective at treating upper respiratory ailments including sinusitis, asthma, season allergic rhinitis, and upper respiratory infections.
- Aspire Breathe Easy – Packed with key ingredients that support healthy breathing, this IV therapy can help alleviate symptoms such as coughing and shortness of breath associated with COVID-19.
How Can You Avoid Contracting the Coronavirus?
In addition to supplying your immune system with the hydration, vitamins, and nutrients it needs to operate at peak function, there are a few things you can do to minimize your risk of exposure to COVID-19.
Avoid People Who Are Sick – Because scientists don’t yet have a full understanding of how COVID-19 is spread, it is best to avoid any contact with people who are sick. Wearing a face mask in public places is an option for those who are healthy, but the CDC does not consider this a necessary precaution in the United States at this time. You should, however, wear a face mask if you are visiting a loved one in a hospital or caring for someone who shows any symptoms associated with COVID-19.
Avoid Infecting Others If You Feel Unwell – At the first sign of symptoms, you should do your best to minimize the chances of infecting others. Stay home from work and avoid coming in close contact with other people. If you do need to go places, such as the pharmacy, wear a face mask.
Practice Great Hygiene – Small habits, including covering your nose or mouth when you sneeze or cough, can minimize the spread of infections, such as COVID-19. Make it a point to do all of the following:
- Wash your hands often with soap and warm water for at least 20 seconds
- If you cannot wash your hands, use hand sanitizer that is at least 60% alcohol
- Avoid touching your face throughout the day (especially eyes, nose, and mouth)
- Cover sneezes and coughs with a clean tissue and dispose of it after use
- Clean and disinfect surfaces including countertops, door handles, faucets, keyboards, tablets, and other handheld devices
