With the popularity of wellness and anti-aging treatments steadily increasing each year, there has been an exciting emergence of new technologies and innovative treatments that target fat removal and muscle toning while boasting shorter than ever recovery times. EMSculpt is one such new treatment that has been gaining popularity with models, celebrities, fitness gurus, and those in pursuit of a healthy lifestyle and appearance.
Why? One big reason is that EMSculpt is completely non-invasive. It’s a great way to supplement your existing physical training program or kickstart a new routine, and requires zero recovery time – that’s right, none!
How Does EMSculpt Breakdown Fat?
The EMSculpt device uses FDA approved High-Intensity Focused Electromagnetic (or HIFEM® for short) technology that causes the muscles within the targeted region of the body to contract 20,000 times in one 30-minute treatment session. It’s similar to an MRI but powerful enough to cause the muscles to fire at an intensity far beyond what is possible to achieve through voluntary physical training exercises – even the most extreme athletes aren’t doing 20,000 crunches or lunges in one 30 minute session.
The intense and rapid succession of these supramaximal contractions begins a process inside the body called lipolysis, which causes locally stored fat cells to breakdown and die. Fatty acids are released, and the dead fat cells are then metabolized and eventually excreted naturally by the body. The electromagnetic energy generated by EMSculpt is the catalyst for a deep remodeling of the muscular structure within the body, but it does not affect the skin at the surface. Your muscles are left looking more toned, tightened, and defined. EMSculpt offers fat removal and muscle strengthening without the scars or recovery time involved with many of the invasive procedures on the market today that achieve similar results.
Who Will Benefit from EMSculpt?
Whether you’re looking for a way to burn fat quickly as a starting point for a new fitness routine, or you’re seeking a boost for your existing physical training regimen, EMSculpt may be the perfect solution. In just a few short treatments, you’ll be well on your way to achieving your goals in ways that wouldn’t be possible through working out alone.
This treatment has a wide range of benefits and has gained notoriety as a way to lift and shape your buttocks, and/or tone and flatten your abs. EMSculpt can be considered as a non-surgical alternative to butt implants, liposuction, and tummy tuck procedures. It has also recently been approved as a treatment for the calves, thighs, biceps, and triceps. It is recommended that patients use EMSculpt treatments in conjunction with regular exercise, rather than as a replacement for workouts.
Athletes and patients healing from an injury are excellent candidates for treatment. EMSculpt can help rebuild muscles faster and speed up the recovery process after certain injuries. It also works well in conjunction with physical therapy.
In addition to fat removal and muscle strengthening, EMSculpt has been shown to reduce the gaps in the abdominal muscles caused by diastasis recti, a condition which can be caused by pregnancy, certain surgeries, significant weight changes, or improper form while lifting weights and other heavy objects.
What is the Treatment Process?
Each treatment takes about 30 minutes during which patients lie down on a table with a paddle placed on the desired area they want to focus on. The paddle is secured with a band that is velcroed around the body part. Patients do not need to disrobe completely.
During each treatment, patients experience three phases of contractions that increase in intensity based on that individual patient’s level of comfort. Some patients report feeling a tingling sensation similar to the feeling of a hand or foot falling asleep. Patients are welcome to bring a book to read or just lie back and close their eyes while t+he machine works its magic.
How Many Treatments Will I Need?
Four sessions spread out over two to three weeks are recommended for maximum results. After that, patients may schedule a periodic maintenance or follow-up session, depending on their goals and specific consultation with their clinician. Patients who maintain a steady physical training program after the treatment and continue to exercise the muscles that have been targeted by EMSculpt treatment on their own will have the longest-lasting effects.
How Long Will It Take to See Results?
Many patients see results immediately after their first treatment and continue to see an improvement for up to six months after the last session. In a company-sponsored study, EMSculpt found that patients’ subcutaneous abdominal fat was reduced by 19% at one month after treatment and 23% three months after treatment.
Are There Any Side Effects?
Because EMSculpt is non-surgical, patients do not need to do anything specific to prepare for their session. After treatment, some patients do experience mild soreness similar to the feeling after an intense workout, but there are no post-treatment procedures to follow. The supramaximal contractions generated by EMSculpt actually help flush lactic acid out of the body (which is what would normally cause you to feel sore after a workout), so many patients experience little to no soreness at all after sessions. You can return to your regular schedule immediately after receiving treatment.
It should be noted that EMSculpt is not intended as a replacement for physical training and exercise. It is not recommended for women who are pregnant. It is also important to let your clinician know if you have an IUD (intra-uterine device for birth control), any metal pieces (such as screws and plates), or medical devices (such as a pacemaker) in your body, as EMSculpt is not safe for patients with these types of implants.
