What Are Therapeutic Ultrasounds?
The term “ultrasound” often brings to mind images of a fetus in the womb and expectant mothers tracking the development of their unborn baby. While ultrasound imagery can be used for this purpose and to diagnose certain conditions in both men and women, therapeutic ultrasound therapy is something completely different.
Commonly incorporated into physical therapy regimens to treat pain, therapeutic ultrasound can be used in two ways:
Deep Heating Treatment - This form of therapeutic ultrasound therapy works by heating the damaged tissue. You can think of this like a warm compress that penetrates into deeper tissues, instead of just the tissue close to the skin. This warming of the cells is an effective way to increase blood flow, maximize the healing processes within the body, and reduce pain symptoms.
Non-Thermal Treatment - This form of therapy uses an ultrasound machine to send energy into damaged tissues or pain areas. This energy induces a process called “stable cavitation” where the microscopic gas pockets surrounding various tissues begin to rapidly expand and contract. Stable cavitation can stimulate cellular processes that speed up the overall healing process.
What Are Therapeutic Ultrasounds Used For?
Therapeutic ultrasound therapy is used to treat a wide range of soft-tissue injuries. Some conditions and ailments therapeutic ultrasounds can be used to reduce the symptoms of include:
- Tendonitis
- Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
- Bursitis
- Frozen Shoulder
- Ligament Injuries
- Joint Tightness
- Muscle and Ligament Sprains
- Low Back Pain
- Ankle Sprains
- Meniscal Tears
- Neck Pain
- Rotator Cuff Tears
What Are the Benefits of Therapeutic Ultrasounds?
Therapeutic ultrasounds are a powerful tool that can speed up the recovery process after an injury, alleviate chronic pain, and promote overall healing. Therapeutic ultrasound is also used to break up scar tissue and reduce swelling or inflammation. This therapy is non-invasive, requires no pre-treatment preparation, and patients are able to return to their normal activities immediately after therapy sessions. Treatments should be painless and typically last no more than 15 minutes, so therapy can be easily incorporated into busy schedules.
What Should I Expect During Therapeutic Ultrasounds?
Therapeutic ultrasounds may be incorporated into a physical therapy routine or used as a stand alone treatment. Your practitioner will determine the appropriate therapeutic ultrasound dosage and intensity to treat your specific ailment. This is based on the condition being treated, the severity of symptoms, and the unique medical history of each individual patient.
The process is completely non-invasive. Conductive gel is applied to the skin at the site of injury or pain and then the ultrasound device is gently pressed against the skin and moved back and forth. The maximum therapeutic ultrasound frequency of treatments is one session per day, however 2 to 3 sessions per week is common. Your overall care regimen will be determined by your doctor or therapist.
It should be noted that therapeutic ultrasounds are not recommended for women who are pregnant and should not be performed over an open wound or lesion. In addition, this therapy should not be used above or near implanted medical devices, such as a pacemaker.
